USL Y (Summer) League Information (formerly Super Y)

Super Y is now USL Youth!

WHAT IS THE USL Y LEAGUE?
USL Y is a competitive, travel-level summer league in which local clubs compete against each other to qualify for the Finals held in Florida in December.  Age groups represented are U11 through U19.  The USL Y League is a great way for players to get additional coaching, practice, and playing opportunities with friends and teammates during the summer months.

WHEN DOES THE USL Y SEASON RUN?
The season consists of approximately 8 - 10 games. The majority of games are played during the summer from mid-June through the second week of August. The North American Finals are held early December in Florida.  **Note that teams who qualify for the USL Y finals are REQUIRED to travel to Florida in December to compete.  Failure to do so will result in large fines.

HOW DO I REGISTER FOR TRYOUTS?
Preliminary tryouts will be held in January and February 2024.  If there is still space, additional tryouts may be scjheduled.  Register for GFR Super Y tryouts for free HERE. Register your player for the age group that he/she will play in Fall 2024.

HOW MANY PLAYERS WILL BE SELECTED FOR EACH GFR USL Y LEAGUE TEAM?
Depending on the talent of a tryout pool, 16 - 22 players will be selected. Selected players will receive an invitation to join the team and pay a registration fee. The players will compete for the 18-player roster that will be selected for each game day. These selections fill the most competitive 16-18 player game-day roster while still allowing players to take some time off during the summer months for vacations. The USL Y League provides a competitive training environment for all players.

WHAT IS THE COMMITMENT?
Training will start at the beginning of June and continue through the first week in August. Ideally, practices will be at least twice a week. At the discretion of the coach, additional or fewer practices may be had based on the age group of a team, practice need, and league game schedule.

WHERE WILL THE TEAMS TRAIN AND PLAY HOME GAMES?
Training and home games will primarily take place at Nike Park and Lake Fairfax, and as needed other local facilities.  Training and game schedules will be made by the USL Y Director. Games are held both during the week and on weekends through the summer.

WHO WILL COACH AND TRAIN THE TEAMS?
GFR Coaches and other coaches appointed by our USL Y Director, Gus Donolo. The USL Y Director will choose high level coaches for the teams and oversee the entire program.

WHAT UNIFORMS WILL THE USL Y LEAGUE TEAMS USE?
GFR Travel uniforms will be worn for the GFR USL Y League. Existing GFR players will wear current GFR kits. Non-GFR players will need to purchase a GFR kit (1 pair of shorts, 1 pair of socks, and two game jerseys) at an additional cost of approximately $150 per player.  Orders will be placed with Sterling Soccer.

HOW MUCH DOES THE GFR USL Y LEAGUE COST?

There is no cost to register or try out for GFR USL Y League teams. Selected players will receive an invitation to join the team and pay the registration fee.  The fee can be paid in full upfront or made in 2 installments.
