Great Falls Reston Recreational Soccer

Great Falls Reston Soccer Club (GFRSC) offers several recreational programs designed to provide a balanced, fun environment for the player who desires to learn the game, advance ball control skills, and participate in games. All of our soccer programs are held outside unless specifically stated otherwise.

We actively encourage parents to volunteer to coach a team or to act as an assistant coach.  No prior coaching experience or soccer knowledge is required. GFRSC holds coaches meetings and training opportunities.

Players must register by birth year. Players can request to play up during the registration process. The request is reviewed prior to the start of the season. IF your child is approved to play up you will receive notification via email. Please review the age group chart.

Registration for recreational soccer Opens June 1 for Fall and December 1 for Spring. A $25 late fee takes effect at the end of on-time registration, some age groups or programs may also switch to wait-list.

Our practice and game schedules are based on coach and field availability, so we do not know specific schedules until after teams are formed near the beginning of the season. This information is released to registered players and their families only. We do NOT post fields on the website for player safety and potential field permit changes.

RECREATIONAL SOCCER OPTIONS

a. Me & My Ball - Players born 2015 & 2016

Me & My Ball is a 7 week program designed to introduce boys and girls that are under five to soccer. This very popular program is run by professional soccer trainers that have extensive experience working with this age group. The program is offered on Thursday OR Saturday. Each child in the program receives a jersey at the first training. Each session lasts an hour and the focus is on learning basic ball handling by playing fun games and drills. This program assists in developing basic motor skills and promoting a healthy, active lifestyle. We provide a non-threatening environment where young players can begin to feel comfortable running and playing games using a soccer ball.  For example, in one drill the kids pretend to sweep the deck of a pirate ship by tapping the ball from one foot to another. In another game, the coach pretends to be a shark and the kids are “minnows” attempting to dribble the ball across the field/“ocean” before being eaten by the shark.

Players will need to wear comfortable athletic clothing and their GFR jersey, tennis shoes or cleats, and shin guards. Players should bring a size 3 ball and a full water bottle to each session.

b. House - Players born 2010-2014

Great Falls Reston Soccer’s House program includes players in the 6U to 10U age groups and is an 8 week program. Each of these age groups is coached by parents and volunteers. Girls and boys are mixed in the 6U age group. Beginning at 7U, girls have the option of playing with the boys or playing in a “girls only” program. Each child in the program receives a uniform at the first training. The uniform includes a jersey, shorts and socks.

The 6U program is offered once a week on Saturday afternoons. The first half of each hour long weekly session is spent on games and drills similar to those in the Me & My Ball program. The second half of the session involves the playing of small-sided soccer games against other teams in the league. The emphasis is on maximizing the time each individual player has on the ball while introducing the concept of scoring goals and facing an opponent. During these sessions, each volunteer coach is paired with a professional soccer trainer. This insures that the quality of the sessions is high while providing hands on training for our volunteer coaches.

Starting at 7U, the program expands to include two 1-hour long sessions every week. This typically includes a team practice and a game on either Saturday morning (generally between 8am and noon) or Sunday afternoon (generally between 12-6pm). These sessions are conducted by volunteer parents and coaches.

As the players mature and develop, more complexity is introduced to the sessions and games. In U6, the games are played on smaller fields with pug goals in a 4v4 format where the coaches roll balls back into play. At 7U, we expand the size of the field a bit and continue a 4v4 format. Throw-ins, goal kicks, and corner kicks are introduced at 8U. By 9U, our teams are playing on a much larger field, with traditional goals, goalies, a 7v7 format, and referees applying the laws of the game. Teamwork, tactics, positions, and passing concepts becoming more and more prominent as the players mature and the field size expands. Nevertheless, our primary focus is, and should be, on development of technical skills and player creativity.

To supplement the coaching offered by our volunteers, Great Falls Reston Soccer offers a “Soccer Academy” during the week where all the players in the House program are invited to receive additional coaching from GFRSC’s professional trainers with a focus on developing technical soccer skills. Academy is a 7 week training program offered on Tuesdays in South Reston or on Wednesdays in North Reston. Academy registration is required to participate. See Registration Below.

Players will need to wear tennis shoes or cleats, shin guards, and comfortable athletic clothing to practices and their GFR uniform to games. Players should bring a ball and a full water bottle to each session.

The Pre-Travel Academy is specially designed for 2012 and 2013 players (U8s and U7s) who are more serious about soccer, that excel in their teams and need a more competitive and challenging environment to develop as young athletes. The Pre-Travel Academy is designed to provide a competitive atmosphere while furnishing the players with positive experiences to nurture their self-esteem, confidence, and passion for the game.  Professional trainers will apply age-appropriate training curriculum focused primarily on foot skills, and the introduction of basic soccer concepts in order to offer highest development program for U8s and U7s.

Please note: The 2013 (U7 Part-Time Academy) players must register for House/Recreational soccer at GFRSC in order to participate in Pre-Travel. The players will train and play games each week with their assigned rec team in addition to the Pre-Travel Academy, unless they register for the PTA Full-Time Academy program (optional).
